Supreme Court Outreach:  Listening Sessions

#FFFFFF

In the Fall of 2022, the Colorado Supreme Court justices spread out across the state to visit directly with employees and judicial officers in all 22 judicial districts, as well as the Colorado Court of Appeals, Denver Probate Court, Denver Juvenile Court, and the State Court Administrator’s Office.  Many district visits involved multiple meetings in multiple courthouse locations.  These listening sessions were designed to give staff and district leaders opportunities to share whatever was on their minds with the justices, both in person and through anonymous pre- and post-visit surveys.  Clear themes emerged from these listening sessions, including compensation, the need for more training (everything from onboarding, nuts & bolts substantive training, to management training, to leadership training), and the need for more and better communication (between SCAO and the districts, between the Judicial Branch and the public, between SCAO divisions, between the Court and SCAO, etc.). The Court plans to conduct follow up listening sessions later in 2023 to report to the districts on progress regarding the issues raised.

In October-November 2022, Justice Márquez and Chief Judge Román also hosted a series of listening sessions with the diverse bar associations about the Troyer and ILG Reports and the Supreme Court’s Workplace Culture Initiative.  These sessions included meetings with the Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA), the Colorado Disability Bar Association (CDBA), the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association (CHBA), the Colorado Women’s Bar Association (CWBA), the Colorado LGBT Bar Association, the South Asian Bar Association (SABA), and the Sam Cary Bar Association (SCBA).  Justice Márquez also presented on these topics at the CWBA Legislative Breakfast.
